10 Fun Ways to Use a Random Name Picker in the Classroom

A random name picker can do a lot more than choose who answers the next question. It can make everyday classroom decisions faster, fairer, and a little more fun.

With Ready Set Pick, you can drop student names into the Fishbowl Name Draw and choose someone at random right in your browser. It is free, there is no account to create, and you can reuse it for all kinds of classroom activities.

1. Choose Who Answers a Question

Instead of calling on the same few raised hands, put everyone’s names into the picker and let chance choose. It gives quieter students a chance to participate and keeps everyone wondering who might be next.

2. Pick a Classroom Helper

Need someone to pass out papers, collect supplies, erase the board, or carry something to the office? Draw one name and you are done.

3. Choose Who Goes First

Use a random name draw when deciding who presents first, starts a game, reads first, or takes the first turn during an activity. No arguing. The picker decided.

4. Pick Reading Partners

Draw names two at a time to create quick reading or discussion partners. For larger groups, Ready Set Pick also has a Team Maker when you want the computer to divide the whole class at once.

5. Choose a Brain Break Leader

Let one student choose the stretch, movement break, quick game, or activity for the class. Randomly choosing the leader keeps it from always falling to the same kids.

6. Decide Who Shares Their Work

After independent work, draw a few names to share answers, writing, artwork, or ideas with the class. Students know anyone might be chosen, but you do not have to decide who gets picked.

7. Pick a Mystery Reward Winner

Add the names of students who earned entries during the day or week, then draw a winner. The reward does not have to be big. It could be choosing a classroom song, sitting in a special seat, picking the next brain break, or getting first choice of an activity.

8. Choose a Review Question Captain

Draw one student to choose the next review question, category, vocabulary word, or problem for the class. It turns a normal review session into something a little more interactive.

9. Randomize Presentation Order

Presentation order can somehow become a whole negotiation. Put the names into the picker and let randomness settle it in seconds. You can also remove names after they are chosen so nobody gets picked twice.

10. Make Everyday Decisions More Fun

Sometimes you just need a quick answer. Who gets the blue marker? Which table lines up first? Who chooses the next example? Who starts the game? Instead of spending time deciding, let the random picker handle it.
